Tutorial: 7 Steps to a perfect Button Tied Ribbon Bow… and 3 cards with subtle differences

I am frequently asked to tell how I tie the bows on my card.. so today, I’m sharing a step by step tutorial for a button tied bow,  one of the bows you frequently see on Created By You.  This past month, as a guest designer for the Cards & Things Challenge, I actually made three cards for Krista’s Color Challenge.  All three cards used Pumpkin Pie, Regal Rose, Pretty In Pink and Chocolate Chip Card Stock from Stampin Up.  Each was also enhanced with ribbon, one with a button tied bow  (today’s tutorial).

So… here they are!  First up:  a button tied onto the ribbon to create a sash look

P7020008buttonsashbowcreatedbyu

The one I submitted as my guest designer entry to the Cards & Things Challenge.

P7020002bkkristakrischallengecbyu

And last, changing it up a bit… looks more like a little girls’ Easter Dress with a button tied bow sash (this is the one I’m going to show you today).

P7020009buttontiedbowcreatedbyyou

So step by step, here is how to create a button tied bow!!

  • Start by cutting a strip of ribbon appx. 3/4” longer than your card and set aside.
  • Next, run Stampin Up Linen Thread through  your button… but leave a large loop behind the button

3P7230008

  • Next fold one end of the ribbon across towards the spool.  NOTE:  I rarely cut ribbon from the spool until after the bow has been tied and secured!

 1P7230002

  • And of course, the  other end back over the now looped and loose end… (this photo is backwards isn’t it??)

2P7230004

  • Lay the folded bow atop the pre cut ribbon strip (appx. 3/4” longer than your card)

4P7230006

  • Slip the threaded button around the bow and ribbon strip

5P7230011

  • And cinch it down, securing with a postman’s knot (wrap the thread around twice and pull to secure… repeat) and now you’re ready to attach it to your card!

Yikes!! Another Sketch Frenzy Friday Sketch!!

Well… it’s another, and it’s also the right one!  Somehow I showed you a preview of a future card and sketch which I had all ready to go when the date rolls around… not to worry, I’ll create another card.  In the mean time I’d like to share the original sketch for 7-30 by Tess Davis

SFF073010tessdavis

I love the layers, and design of this sketch!  Tina stepped up and created it just last week… I started the card but it got lost in my classes and events… and then it got mailed out to someone… double Yikes!  So… this evening when I got back home, I quickly threw this card together… although not an exact rendition of the sketch, it was the best I could do with 10 minutes to stamp before DH came home!

Psff0730createdbyyou324098

I substituted the ribbon for the sentiment for the sketch (and the brads too, I guess) and quickly came up with this card.  I had already made the Santa image the other day, and was playing around with the wood background stamp, going for a white on white Card…   The Santa Beard was dry embossed using the Vintage Wallpaper Textured Impressions Folder, and then embossing highlighted with a 2-way glue pen and wonderful Dazzling Diamonds.

P73createdbyyousff0730439ejds

Santa’s hat is actually embossed with Whisper White Embossing powder on Very Vanilla Cardstock with the tree image from Stampin Up stamp set Christmas Classics.  I borrowed the greeting from the Contempo Christmas Stamp Set (new in the Stampin Up Idea Book & catalog this month)…. added a few flat backed basic pearls, fastened a brad around the taffeta ribbon… and a quick card is made.  Hope you like it… my DH always says I’m the go-to person in a crisis, and that I work better under pressure.. so how’s that for pulling together a card in under 10 minutes?

Sorry Tess for messing up your sketch!!

I believe the next stop is Susan Grant! I’m quite certain she used the correct sketch :)

Check back tomorrow for a new tutorial, and tomorrow evening for a blog candy winner announcement… keep posting those comments (with this post you have even one more chance to win ;)

Hugs,

Sharon

Love Letters for Christmas… another Welcome Christmas Card

Christmas in July… perfect time to get all your holiday card making supplies!  Just think.. by this time next week, you could be hand crafting your very own Christmas cards, your friends will be impressed, amazed, and begging for more!

Today’s card uses the Welcome Christmas Stamp Set from Stampin Up… again!  One stamp set, so many designs!  Kind of a fun retro design, the image shows children sledding and playing in the snow… can you hear the giggles and taunts?  When my children were small, we lived on the side of a hill in the Pocono Mountains… and when it snowed, it really snowed!  The street was not very busy, especially when covered with a foot or two of snow… so we would take our sleds to the top of the hill and tandem sleigh down the hill, across the driveway… and down the street. Of course there were several adults on look-out for a random snow plow or emergency vehicle :)

P7200019Created BY You Welcome Christmas

Still enjoying the Love Letters Designer Series Paper, although it may be getting close to reordering time… one pack of Designer Series Paper can only go so far, right?  (Ha Ha.. good thing I ordered two from the get-go!)  The paper patterns are very classic designs in large and small polka dots, plaids and more… with very vanilla, riding hood red, and basic black colors!

Skipped the basic black in this card and opted for Early Espresso instead… love that deep, rich espresso color, it’s like a cup of dark Columbian eye coffee!

Stampin Up Stamp Supplies used for Today’s Card:

Stamps:  Welcome Christmas

Paper:  Early Espresso, Riding Hood Red, and Very Vanilla Card Stock, Love Letters Designer Series Paper

Accessories:  Mat Pack and Paper Piercing Tool, Vintage Brads, Paper Snips, and Early Espresso Satin Ribbon

Come back tomorrow for Sketch Frenzy Friday… and a couple VERY SPECIAL announcements too ;-)  I’ve got something up my sleeve, and you’re going to enjoy it!

Hugs,

Sharon

Just Believe.. a Stamp Set, Not a Christmas Card!

I read the title of this stamp set in the new Idea Book & Catalog and truly expected it to host at least one image of Santa Claus… isn’t it funny how we automatically grandfather images and concepts with some phrases?  Not a Santa Claus, however the Just Believe stamp set does have several graceful floral images… and I’m sure that if I tried, it could be a Christmas Card as well.

Today’s card however, is a study in Vanilla and Black.  Inspired by a sketch challenge and the wonderful polka dot paper from the Love Letter Designer Series Paper Pack… talk about association… Love Letter?  My guess would be that it was intended for Valentines’ Day!  My first pack of this luscious DSP is almost spent… I will definitely be ordering more soon… how about you?

1P7190003JustBelieve Created By You

Just a simple and elegant sketch based card… I used the tallest image from the Just Believe stamp set, and the verse was stamped then punched with a 1 3/4” circle punch.  The sketch did not call for a ribbon adornment, but this card had such a formal ‘tuxedo’ feel, that a bow tie seemed appropriate.

A sponge dauber and basic black classic ink were used along the outer edges of all the very vanilla pieces, although very lightly and delicately to render an even and planned layer effect.  Doesn’t show up so much on the Basic black Mat.. but a dauber was even used on the polka dot designer series paper!

Solid image stamping can be a bit tricky at times… often a new stamp will have manufacturing residue on the surface which seems to repel the ink.  Lightly sanding the stamp in tiny circles with a sanding block will help… as will re-inking your pad, and resting the inked stamp to set on the cardstock for a minute or more to allow the ink to absorb into the cardstock.

When to re-ink your stamp pads:

  • Have you ever noticed that images stamped with your Basic Black Stamp Pad sometimes appear to have an almost purple cast?  That means it is time to re-ink the pad!
  • Sometimes you’ll notice the edges of the pad are lighter and thicker in appearance than the rest of the pad… it’s time to re-ink!
  • Have you noticed the edges of your stamp pads appear to curl?  Time to re-ink!

Re-inkers are great for many techniques as well, I even mix mine with white craft paint to use on cards, ATC’s and altered canvases.

Have a wonderful day… I’ve got a BIG announcement coming in a few days… stick around, you won’t want to miss it!

Hugs,

Sharon

Cards ‘N Things Guest Designer Challenge #42

Have you been enjoying the Tuesday Cards ‘N Things Challenges?  I hope you’ve been playing along too, it sure has been fun!

Here is the final July Challenge from Cards ‘N Thins… Card Challenge #42

Sketch Challenge 42

For this challenge, I decided to do something a bit more whimsical…  hope you like it!

Created By You Cards N Things Challenge 42

Two Textured Impressions Embossing Folders used here:  Vintage Wallpaper and Dotted.  The sketch called for a strip of something horizontally across the card so I added 1/8” Early Espresso Taffeta Ribbon.  The Trendy Trees Stamp Set seems to lend itself to whimsy, don’t you think?

Stampin’ Up Supplies:

Stamps:  Trendy Trees

Card Stock:  Bashful Blue, Marina Mist, Whisper White, So Saffron, Certainly Celery

Classic Inks:  Early Espresso, Marina Mist, Pear Pizzaz, Daffodil Delight

Accessories:  Hodgepodge Hardware, Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack, Pretties Kit, Early Espresso 1/8” taffeta ribbon, stampin’ dimensionals, mat pack and paper piercing tool, Vintage Wallpaper and Dotted Textured Embossing Folder, Big Shot Machine, mini glue dots, aqua painter, large bird on a branch punch, greenhouse gala DSP

It’s been fun being this months’ Guest Designer at Cards ‘N Things.. I hope you’ll stop by and use the inlinz tool to play along!  Visit Cards ‘N Things Challenge Now.

Welcome Christmas… Cracked Glass and Texture Unite!

Resurrecting an oldie but goodie, the Cracked Glass Technique!

Today’s card uses the Cracked Glass Technique, dual Textured Embossing Folders, Shimmer Mist, and the Welcome Christmas Stamp Set from Stampin Up!  It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the Basic Black Card stock layer has been sprayed using the Shimmer Mist technique… and it really sparkles with a life of it’s own!

The Brushed Gold Card Stock has been dual embossed using two textured embossing folders… Perfect Polka Dots, and Lattice.  They pair well together, don’t you?  Using the heavier design along the bottom of the card provides an anchor for the otherwise heavy and bulky cracked glass image.

P7200017Welcome Christmas Sharon Field

The focal image was stamped on Very Vanilla Cardstock using Basic Black Classic Ink.  After allowing the semi-permanent Basic Black Classic Ink to dry, Versamark Ink was applied over the entire image… directly to the image with the pad.  A layer of Ultra Thick Embossing Powder was added, and then heated with a pre-heated heat tool.  Pre-heating the tool provides quick melting action, and lessens the possibility of burning the image.

Once the image cooled (it gets very, very hot)… A second and third layer of versamark ink and ultra thick embossing powder was added to the image, heating and cooling with each application.

The glass-like image was then popped into the freezer for about 5 or 10 minutes… longer if you become distracted by all the stuff on your stamping desk/table!   Once removed from the freezer, the image is quickly (yet gently) snapped to crack the glass in various places… really cool to demonstrate and teach…

A sponge dauber and soft suede ink were used to cover the entire image and settle somewhat in the cracks… and last, a tissue to remove excess from the image.

I’ve really been having fun with the Welcome Christmas Stamp set.. the silhouette images are too cool.  I’ll be showcasing more cards with this set in the near future!

Stampin Up Supplies Used on Today’s Card:

Stamps:  Welcome Christmas

Card Stock:  Basic Black, Brushed Gold, Very Vanilla

Inks:  Soft Suede & Basic Black Classic Ink, Versamark Ink

Other Supplies:  Heat Tool, Ultra Thick Embossing Powder, Champagne Shimmer Paint, Spritzer Bottle, 5/8” Basic Black Grosgrain Ribbon, Perfect Polka Dots and Lattice Textured Embossing Folder, Rubbing Alcohol

Tomorrow I’m sharing another card made as Guest Designer for Cards & Things Sketch Challenge with Krista… I hope you’ll stop by to see the card… it’s quite different than others’ I’ve posted in the past!  Hope you’ll take some time to play along too!

Hugs,

Sharon

Christmas in July.. Welcome Christmas One Card Two Ways!

Gosh, I love layers… as you can tell!  However, some prefer to keep it simple and use a minimal amount of layers on their cards, or Clean and Simple (CAS).  So, today, I’m going to show you two cards one way.  The focal image is the same on both cards, I’ve only changed the layers and the greeting.

Ok.. the first card using Love Letter Designer Series Paper from Stampin Up, and… LAYERS!!  I’ve even layered the ribbon on this card.  The background is textured using the lattice textured embossing folder, and each of the very vanilla cardstock layers are highlighted along the edges using a Riding Hood Red Stampin’ Write Marker as well.

P7200003WelcomeChristmaslayers

And.. through the magic of the internet… I’ve created a minimalist or CAS (Clean And Simple) version of the same card.  Of course you can guess which is my personal favorite… but which do you prefer?  Are you a CAS stamper, or do you opt for the more intricate layered designs?

P7200004WelcomeChristmasCAS

Stampin Up Stamps and Supplies Used for Today’s Card:

Stamps:  Welcome Christmas, Four the Holidays

Paper:  Love Letter Designer Series Paper; Old Olive & Very Vanilla Card Stock

Classic Inks:  Riding Hood Red, Old Olive

Accessories:  Lattice Textured Embossing Folder, Stampin ‘Write Markers, Mini Glue Dots, narrow and 5/8” grosgrain ribbon, Victoria Crochet Trim, Designer Buttons, Linen Thread, Brushed Silver Brads

Love reading your comments, have a wonderful Sunday!

Making your Own Grabbit Tool… and Dying Perfect Pearls to Match Your Project!

Have you ever had teeny tiny pieces that you need to pick up?  Like the tiny eyes from our new owl punch?  Or to perfectly place pearls hand dyed pearls on your projects?  Then I have a really cool solution for you… a DIY (do it yourself) grabbit tool made with mini glue dots and mini wood dowels!

The mini wood dowels are pre-cut and packaged with other wooden items at your local craft and hobby store… here are the ones I used:

P7230019mindowels_CreatedByYou-438

To make your own grabbit tool, simply place a mini glue dot on the end of the mini dowel…

P7230024moregrabbittool234__348

mold it to fit around the tip of the dowel, and then add a second one, more around the stick itself!

P7230025grabittool1724370987

When you are ready to dye the pearls…. mix one part reinker (a drop) with two parts rubbing alcohol… stir until mixed.   The rubbing alcohol will make the ink coverage more even and less splotchy.

Pick up a Basic pearl with your new grabbit tool… and dip into the dye solution.

P7230056dyedpearlscbyu3294398

Hold or prop vertically until the ink pools along the bottom of the pearl, and lightly touch with a soft tissue to remove excess die…

Repeat dipping process until you have achieved the desired depth and color.  In the photo below, there is a pink pearl which has been dyed, and a soft suede pearl which will soon be dabbed with tissue.

P7230063dyedpearlsincupcbyu

Aha… and here is the card I made using the soft suede dyed pearls, after dipping them twice in the solution and allowing them to dry.

wordplaychristmascardcbyu

If you’re impatient, you can also hit the pearls with a heat tool… but be very careful.  If you leave the heat on them too long, they change color and become more like hammered metal :)  Which… you will probably see show up on another card in the future as well!

Stampin’ Up! Supplies for Today’s Card:

Stamps:  Word Play

Card Stock:  Very Vanilla, Brushed Gold

Ink:  Versamark

Accessories:  Heat Tool, Gold EP, Soft Suede Re-inker, Basic Pearls, Lattice and Elegant Lines Embossing Folder, 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, Wooden Dowels, Mini Glue Dots, Very Vanilla Taffeta Ribbon, Sanding block

Have a great day!  Hugs!

Sketch Frenzy Friday – SFF0723 Bugs N Kisses

Welcome to the Sketch Frenzy Friday Challenge and Mini Blog Tour!  I hope you’re enjoying all the creativity along the way!

frenzyfinal1-300x185cbyu

I’ve really been looking forward to sharing this sketch… I knew what I was going to do with it the moment I saw the preview!  This week’s sketch was created by Sketch Frenzy Friday Team Member Kim Innis… isn’t it fun??

sff0723Sketch for 7-23-10-001

Well, I still took a little creative license on this sketch… but that’s what it’s all about, a starting point for your creativity!  Are you ready for my sketch interpretation?

SFF0723 Bugs N Kisses Created By You

The windows on this card were punched out using my 1 1/4” Square Punch, and the whole front panel is popped up onto the Marina Mist card base.  The packages were borrowed from the Loads Of Love Accessories Stamp Set, then colored with Stampin’ Write Markers.  The grass along the bottom of the card and window images was stamped with Certainly Celery Classic Ink and the Palm Frond image from the Tropical Party Stamp Set.  I had to move the ribbon from where it lay in the sketch… because of my window placement LOL…

Here’s the inside of the card… more bugs ‘n kisses, and faux stitching:

SFF0723 Inside Bugs N Kisses

Here’s the card front before I added all the stamping and dimensionals:

sff0723 template created by you

The center 1 1/4” punch was punched first, pushing the punch as far into the cardstock as I could… until it bumped the edge of the cardstock.  After moving over and centering the punch again closer to the edges of the cardstock, it was punched again (lower left corner) and then punched in the upper right corner.

After stamping the Whisper White Card Front, it was attached to the Marina Mist base with stampin’ dimensionals.  No waste… the 1 1/4” punches were trimmed to 1 1/8”, stamped, daubbered, and placed neatly inside the windows for the final result!

On with the tour!!  Next stop:  Sue Grant!  I can’t wait to see what she did with the sketch!

After the tour, be sure to come back and upload your sketch card… I’d love to see what you do with it too!  Simply upload your card to an online photo gallery, splitcoaststampers, or your blog and then use the inlinkz tool to add your sample!

Artistic Etchings… Another Introductory Brayer Class Card

With a little dazzle and sparkle too!  This card is part of the introductory brayer classes here in Jacksonville, Florida this month and next.  Featuring the Artistic Etchings and Lovely as  A Tree Stamp Set, it’s a perfect Parisian Winter scene!  Snow was even added to the Eifel Tower… doesn’t the whole scene have a calm and serene allure, emit silence and romance?  I think it would make a great romantic invitation to a secret anniversary rendezvous, don’t you?

P7150027

The smaller photo corner punch was added to the lower left of the image, and then I added NEW Basic Rhinestone Jewels from page 188 of the 2010/11 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and Catalog.  I’m really loving both the Basic Rhinestone and Classic Pearl Jewels… they come in three sizes and 150 per package (50 each) for just $4.95… be sure to stock up, as I expect these to fly out of inventory!!

I’m counting the days until my DD arrives home from China!  She has been quite global for the past year.. studying in three different universities around the world!  Talk about living vicariously through your kids!  My DH and I have never been to Europe, and it’s been a real treat listening to her tales, receiving postcards, and small packages.  We’re also very thankful for Skype and the electronic age, which allows us to speak with her almost daily… now if our DS could just figure out how to use Skype… (he’s the brainiac child, so I’m not buying it, how about you?)

So.. here’s our DD in Mutianyu, walking along the Great Wall of China…

1greatwallP1060180-1kcbyu

and posing, on the train with a pork bun…  1mutainyuP1060188-1gwckcbyu

I’ve got so many more photos.. but don’t to outwear my welcome on your pc… but it will be good to have her home again!

Stampin’ Up Supplies Used in Today’s Brayer Class Card:

Stamps:  Lovely As A Tree, Artistic Etchings

Ink:  Bashful Blue, Marina Mist, Pacific Point, Basic Gray, Basic Black

Accessories:  Photo Corner & 1” circle Punch, Brayer, Signo White Gel Pen, Stampin’ Sponges, Basic Rhinestone Jewels, post it notes, Tombow Mono Adhesive

Did you figure out which card from Monday’s post was part of the introductory brayer class line up?  Guess you’re going to have to sign up for the next class to find out!

Introducing the Brayer – Fabulous Tool and Class for You!!

I finally pulled it all together and decided to offer my very first ever introductory brayer classes!  If you haven’t tried it, you really should… and an introductory class is the best way to learn to do it the right way!  In the introductory classes, students create three simple brayer technique cards, each showcasing a unique way to use the brayer and achieve fabulous results.

The classes will be offered again, here in Jacksonville, Florida again next month… be sure to sign up early to reserve your spot!

Today’s cards both use the brayer technique… and were inspired by an embossed card by Alecia Thelin in the July/August 2010 Issue of Crafts Magazine (page 52).  In the original card, the tree image was embossed and then sponged with ink, and a verse was embossed atop the image… but other than adding a bow, that’s where the similarities end (yet respectfully giving credit where credit is due)!

Createdbyu.blogspot.com/Sharon Field

For this card, I used the glossy ghost technique, and then used a brayer to add wild wasabi and bashful blue ink over the image.  The quote is from the Occasional Quotes Hostess Set in the new 2010/11 Idea Book and Catalog… one of my very favorite hostess sets this year!  Stamped with Chocolate Chip Craft Ink, and heat embossed with Clear Embossing Powder, the words really stand out and pop from the card (literally and figuratively).  I didn’t have any wild wasabi ribbon on hand when I first made this card so I simply dyed 5/8” very vanilla taffeta ribbon to match, and attached it with two or three mini glue dots to ensure it would stay perfectly placed.

Here’s another card I made… with more of a masculine ‘feel’ but the using the same images an concept:

Sharon Field http://createdbyu.blogspot.com

Ha ha.. it wasn’t exactly easy getting that narrow taffeta ribbon through the holes in the button… but I did it!!   (You just have to be patient, cut the ribbon on an angle and use a paper piercing tool to coax the ribbon through the holes :)

Stampin’ Up! Stamping Supplies used for both cards:

Stamps:  Lovely As A Tree, Occasional Quotes, Water Color Trio

Inks:  Bashful Blue, Marina Mist & Wild Wasabi Classic Inks; Chocolate Chip Craft Ink; Versa Mark Ink

Cardstock:  Very Vanilla, Early Espresso, Marina Mist

Accessories:  Clear EP, Heat Tool, Paper Piercing Tool, Mat Pack, Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Marker, Narrow Taffeta Ribbon, Neutral Buttons, Mini Glue Dots, brayer, stampin’ sponges, post it notes

Stampin’ Up! Exclusive Sizzix Items:  Vintage Vogue Textured Embossing Folder

Now for my trick question… ONE of these cards was featured in the introductory brayer class taught last week… which one do you think was included (no fair if you were in the class or had lunch with me the day of the class :)

I’ve got two more cards to share from that class… do you want to see them too?

This week I’ll be working on upcoming scrapbooking and quilting with the Big Shot Classes… be sure to check my calendar for classes and sign up early, most classes are offered during the week, on weekends and evenings too!

Hugs,

Sharon

Thanks for coming back today to check out my Cards ‘N Things Challenge #41 Submission!  This one gave me quite a time, with colors a bit out of my comfort zone!  I made four different cards before I was satisfied enough to submit my work as a guest designer!!  So.. if you’re ready… here is the Cards ‘N Things Challenge #41:

I’ll share a couple of the other attempts with you tomorrow if you’re interested!!

To make the floral background for this card, I marker’d a floral image from the Water Color Trio stamp set using… Pumpkin Pie, Regal Rose, and Chocolate Chip Stampin Write Markers.  After stamping the image onto Very Vanilla Cardstock, huffed warm air onto the stamp and stamped a second time which gave a paler impression of the image.  After repeating these steps 3 or 4 times, the stamped cardstock was run through my Big Shot machine using the dotted Textured Impressions Folder.. being sure to have the smooth side of the folder facing the stamped side of the cardstock.

Next, I used a brayer and Pretty In Pink Classic Ink Pad to brayer the smooth side of the Dotted Textured Impressions Folder.  This step was repeated several times until the desired intensity was reached.  After placing a piece of Very Vanilla Cardstock inside the Impressions Folder, it was run through the Big Shot Machine.  Both Brayer and Textured Impressions Folders were easily cleaned with inexpensive baby wipes.

The focal image was inked as in step one, and then stamped onto the Very Vanilla Cardstock and then placed in the Dotted Textured Impressions Folder (stamped image facing the smooth side of the folder) and run through the Big Shot too.

I know several of you have asked how I make my bows… some have even asked for a tutorial… but it is so simple!  The bows are tied in the same manner in which my DH taught our children to tie their shoes… grab each end and make a loop.. once you have two loops or “bunny ears” wrap one bunny ear around the other and then down into the hole formed when you wrapped them around!  The kids picked it up really quick, and loved reciting the bunny ear mantra when tying their shoes too!

Challenges: a Cure for Stampers’ Block CC279 and SC289

Has it ever happened to you?  You can ink up the stamp, and stamp on paper.. but the perfect card just won’t materialize?  It’s called Stampers’ Block.. at least at my house it’s called Stampers’ Block!  You can spend hours and days surfing the internet looking for the perfect card to CASE (Copy and Share Everything)… but when it happens to me, generally throw all my stamps in the garbage.. JUST KIDDING.. What I usually do is turn to Card Making Challenges!

Challenges come in all types:  techniques, card sketches, colors, themes.. and tons more of things to stimulate your brain.  Sometimes I participate in blogger challenges.. but this weekend, I decided to take a look at what challenges were going on at the Splitcoast Stampers Challenge Forum.  This week I chose the Color Challenge CC279:  Marina Mist, Wild Wasabi, and Cherry Cobbler combined with a neutral, AND the SC289 Sketch.

The CC279 color combo was quite a challenge for me.. I love all the colors in the challenge.. but together, not something in my comfort zone!!  Here is the card I came up with combining both CC279 and SC289 using the Just Believe Stamp Set from the 2010/2011 Idea Book & Catalog!

I’m really loving that new Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch (that’s a mouthful.. wonder who came up with that?)  I think I should start a trend calling it the DSRB Punch instead of Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch.. what do you think?

Anyway, the punch is so easy to use, line up and achieve crisp clean punch results!  I know you’re seeing that owl punch all over the internet… And, yes I have the owl.. but the DSRB is still my favorite!

Did you happen to notice the tiny polka dotted paper daisy on the focal image?   It’s the smallest Daisy from the new Paper Daisies on page 188 of the 2010/11 Idea Book and Catalog.  I used my Cherry Cobbler Stampin’ Write Marker to add polka dots to it.  The tiny pearl center is from the Basic Pearls Jewels on the same page… pretty cool, aren’t they?  Here’s a close-up of the daisy, pearl, and DSRB Punch:

Isn’t it fun?  The Just Believe stamp set is one of 5 FREE sets I earned from Stampin’ Up! this MONTH for sales and recruiting.. how cool is that?  Who can’t use 1, 2 or 5 a few free stamp sets?  It was certainly a pleasant surprise for me!

Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing another card designed for the Cards & Things Challenge with Krista.  I’ve really had a lot of fun as guest designer this month… it’s always fun to design and work with other talented stamp artists!  I hope you’ll check out the challenge and play along with us tomorrow…

Antique Brads complete this fun Challenge Card!

Do you enjoy doing challenges?  It can be a lot of fun taking an initial sketch and improvising along the lines to make it your very own design!  Today’s card share started as just that.. a sketch and challenge for the Late Night Stampers’ Group, LNS79.  The original sketch had half a top note die cut attached to the left side of the card, and a large heart covering the right side of the top note die cut.  I think there was a sentiment in the lower right corner too.

My box of new Stampin’ Up! Supplies had just arrived, with GORGEOUS, MUST HAVE Antique Brads, Elegant Soiree Designer Series Paper, and 5 new FREE stamp sets I had earned from Stampin Up!  Now who needs more inspiration than THAT?  What fun!

So, in a bustle and a whirl, with new supplies all around, almost magically…. this card came together, loosely based on LNS79!

LNS79 Created By You Card by Sharon Field

While I have to tell you I definitely drooled over the new Antique Brads on page 187 of the 2010-11 Idea Book & Catalog… holding and touching them in person is way cool!!  There are 5 different designs in the package, and as you pull them out of the container, each one just gets better and better!!!  These brads are like fine antique buttons, metal (not plastic) with deeply etched designs, antiquing and detail.  I knew I was going to like them, and ordered two containers when I placed my first order for the new IB&C… and they’re going on my next order too!

As a demonstrator, I receive a healthy discount on the supplies I use at my classes and events… and since this is my only job, I really had to be conservative when placing the new catalog order.  Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the quality, designs, and choices I made on that order… the Elegant Soiree paper has a fine and elegant ‘hand’ (fabric term).. no wimpy and flimsy paper here!

BTW… have you fallen in love the antique brads yet?  I know, I know.. enough already… but look at it up close!!

antiquebradcbyu717

The non-DSP flower layers were embossed using textured embossing folders: Perfect Polka Dots, and Square Lattice… just added a little ‘something’ to the die cuts, don’t you think?

Word Play, the stamp set used on this card was one of five I earned for free!  The stamp set has expressions for just about every occasion.. including “You mean the world to me”, “you’re in my thoughts and my heart”, and “happy I do day” to name just three of the 12 expressions!  The wood mounted set retails for $41.95, and the clear mount retails for $28.95… but I got mine free.. isn’t that way cool??

Are you ready to make this card?  It’s quick and easy, to put together too… and of course all the colors match and go together so well… that’s something stampin up specializes in.. matching cardstock, ribbon, inks, and more!

Stamping Supply List for today’s Challenge Card:

Stamps:  Word Play

Fancy Folds Card Tutorial… Remember the Artichoke?

I had so many emails and questions about this card, that I decided to share the instructions with all of you via a tutorial!  Remember the Artichoke Card?  It really wow’d everyone at my Card Club and Classes too.. to jog your memory, here it is!

1P6190004disk88remembertheartichoke

I called it an artichoke card because after I had stamped the image from the Friends Never Fade Stamp set, I thought it really looked like a very fancy artichoke!  Anyway, today’s tutorial should answer all those questions and emails which I have been receiving during the last week.. here we go!

First, you’ll need to gather the Stamping Supplies for this tutorial:

Stamps:  Heard From the Heart, Friends Never Fade, All a Flutter

Cardstock:  Whisper White, Marina Mist, Bashful Blue, Old Olive

Ink:  Versamark, and Old Olive Classic Ink

Accessories:  Brights Designer Buttons, Linen Thread, Stampin Dimensionals, Marina Mist Narrow Taffeta Ribbon (appx. 9.5”), Basic Black Embossing Powder, Signo White Gel Pen, Dotted Textured Embossing Folder, Tombow Multi Adhesive, mini glue dots

Tools:  Sizzix Big Shot Machine, Paper Trimmer with Scoring blade, Heat Tool

References:  Vellum Butterflies Tutorial

Card Stock Cutting and Scoring Directions:

Whisper White Cardstock:

  • 8 1/4” x 5 1/4”, scored at 2 1/2” and 6 3/4” (see Diagram A) for card shell
  • 2” x 4 5/8” for front decor
  • 3 3/4” x 5” for inside of card

Old Olive Card Stock:

  • 5 1/2” x 1 5/8”, 5 1/2” x 2 5/8” and 5 1/2” x JUST A HAIR under 4 1/4” for inside of card

Bashful Blue Cardstock:

  • 2 1/8” x 4 3/4” for outer/front decor panel
  • 4” x 5 1/4” for inside of card

Marina Mist Cardstock:

  • 2 1/4” x 4 7/8” for outer/front decor panel
  • scrap for vellum butterfly technique

Vellum Card Stock:

So.. do you have everything ready to go??

After you have cut and scored your Whisper White Cardstock (8 1/4” x 5 1/4”) it will look just like this (Diagram A).. well, minus the handwriting, arrows, and ink!!

cardDiagramA717tutorial

Next, you’ll emboss ONLY the top/front (wider) flap of the Whisper White Cardstock using the dotted textured embossing folder and your Sizzix Big Shot machine!  Carefully line up the first row of dots just below the scored line for the card, and make everything is parallel and perpendicular!  I changed the cardstock color in the next photo to Bashful Blue so you could have a better view of the alignment :)  If you look closely, you will see that the edge of the EF (embossing folder) really lands slightly higher than the scored line of the cardstock.

Dotted Embossing Folder 717

Once this step is complete and you have removed the cardstock from the textured embossing folder, you’ll want to add the narrow taffeta ribbon to the lower half of the card.  I tie my ribbon around my finger to make bows.. and then slip the ribbon off my finger and cut the ribbon on a diagonal.. but that’s another tutorial :)  Attach your ribbon with mini glue dots approximately 1/2” above the lower card fold.

TIP:  Placing one mini glue dot behind the knot in the bow allows perfect placement, and keeps the knot from moving or sliding on the card.  A mini glue dot on opposite ends of the ribbon can be used to secure the ribbon to the back of the Whisper White Cardstock (while your bow stays neatly in place).

Next you’ll want to attach the larger Old Olive Cardstock to the inside and center of the card, making sure that it is centered and the overlap on each side is equal.  Grid or Graph Paper is a useful tool for this step.. you can align the cardstock, and see that your placement is perfectly square as well.  (I’m not showing you the grid paper in this photo because the Whisper White cardstock got totally lost in the picture when I did that!)

Instead of Grid Paper, you’re getting a peek at the new In-Color Blushing Bride.. isn’t it cool?

Hold the two pieces of cardstock securely, and flip them over to take a peek at the other side.. make sure those babies are square and even!

Now you are ready to add the inside flaps to the card.  Once again, it is important that you position the Old Olive cardstock so that it is evenly aligned.. HOWEVER.. AND THIS IS IMPORTANT… you will NOT put the cardstock all the way to the score line on either flap… leave an every so narrow gap.  You want both the top and bottom pieces to meet when the card is folded closed.  Check that your cardstock aligns with the previously positioned Old Olive center piece as well.

When both flaps are attached, the outside of your card will look like this..

P7120008meetmiddle0717

Once stamped, and glued in place, the inside of the card will look like this… Note the picture is really blown up and modified, the white space is really much less than 1/16”.

imageopenwithwhite0717

In the sample above, I used Marina Mist and Old Olive Stampin’ Write Markers- brush tip to color the image from the Friends Never Fade Stamp Set.  As an added touch, I also added four tiny Old Olive dots next to the stem… actually, I did that because I had a creative opportunity… and the dots covered it up nicely :)  I always say “There are no mistakes in Stamping, just Creative Opportunities”…  if you mess something up, there’s always a fairly simple creative solution… and if that doesn’t work.. it’s only paper, right?

The last remaining piece was stamped with those regal artichokes from the Friends Never Fade Stamp Set, and greeting from the Heard From the Heart stamp set using Old Olive Classic Ink and layered onto Bashful Blue and Marina Mist Cardstock Layers with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  THIS IS IMPORTANT:   Only place your dimensionals at the top and the middle of the layered image sandwich.. the layered sandwich actually over-hangs the bottom half of the card by 1/2”!

Created By You halfinchover0717

:) If you put stampin dimensionals on the lower half, you will be sealing your card shut.. permanently!

Of course the last step is to use the scraps, versamark, black embossing powder, and signo white gel pen to create your Vellum Butterfly.. and then attach it to the card in a pretty precarious position.

Hmm.. I just noticed the ruler in the photo above is also showing you that the gap between inside Old Olive layers is less than 1/16”.. how’s that for detail?

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial, I’d love to read your comments… and of course, you know… all these supplies and more for your paper crafting, scrap booking, and quilting needs can be found at my online stampin’ up store!

Hugs, and have a wonderful weekend!
