In the Pink

Card Stock, that is!! I've been so swamped with our DD moving home this week, a big spring break camp on Monday, and a club meeting tomorrow.  Unfortunately, my blog posting has fallen behind.  To fill the void (so Esther can enjoy her morning coffee routine)... I decided to fill a couple days with swaps I've received!  Today's cards will feature pink card stock.. so here we go!

This first card was made by Leslie Irvin of Albuquerque, NM.  I love how she cut out the little sock monkey and showcased her popping through a double window frame to wave her "stamp" pennant!  It reminds me of a recent visitor to the senior stampin' session "Fluffy" the bunny.  Fluffy travelled from far to visit Grandma Esther, and really enjoyed stamping with us too!

sockmonkeyleslie_irvin_cbyu

Next card... featuring a glitter technique technique, was made by Deborah J (that's all she gave me girls!)  After coloring the image from Serene Spring, Deborah covered the surface of the Whisper White card stock with Versamark ink and Iridescent Ice embossing powder before heating with her heat tool.  Just dazzling in person too!

deborahJserenespring_cbyu

This last card was difficult to photograph.. done in very soft pastel colors using the Bugs and Kisses (dormant) stamp set, Pretty in Pink card stock and ink, and Gable Green card stock and ink.  This card has a soft nursery quality to it, and was made by Tamie Ackerson of Corunna, Michigan.

bugnsnkissestamieackerson_c

This guy is just the life of the party... and quite a social animal too.  He busily inspects every bag, purse, and shoe at stamp camps.  Monday was no exception.  I do believe he wore himself out...  Everyone tells me he is part mancoon... but I've always wondered if it's not a little raccoon.. check out the tail!  Keep in mind... this 20 lb. cat is sitting on a very big overstuffed recliner!!  That's a purse, and a pillow he's plopped himself onto!

More swap shares tomorrow, and then I hope to get back to my regular schedule.

Coming Soon to a Mailbox Near You... Mini Catalog Sneak Peek

There are so many beautiful stamp sets in the new Occasions Mini Catalog!!  I had a really tough time choosing which stamps to showcase in my camps.  As a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator, I get to pre-order sets and play with them well before they are released to the general public.  The cover of the new catalog is enough to make you drool... It's simply amazing to study all that this cover has in store... Just wait until you see the inside pages and stamp sets!

Occasions09_US_cbu_cover

So... what's in store?  Notice the corduroy baja breeze brads attaching the handle to the box on the cover?  The corduroy buttons and brads debuted in the the Spring/Summer Idea Book 2009... but the occasions mini catalog has them in two NEW colors... Baja Breeze and Basic Gray!

Did you happen to notice all the delightful little butterflies?  They're cut from a new batch of designer series papers in soft spring colors.  You can see the patterns beneath the box, and in the background too.

In the back of the box, there's a paperclip attaching a label to a tiny box.  The label is a new die cut, and just one selection available with the new MATCHBOX DIE!  Box construction couldn't be easier!

The ribbon on the checked box in the foreground is new too... soft and elegant, wide satin ribbon which may easily be died to match the Classic Inks and Card Stock!  There's even more... rub-on's, window sheets, Jumbo Eyelets, and did I mention STAMPS!!  I can't wait for you to see all the new products in the mini catalog promotion!!  Contact me to host your in-home demo, or to receive your special copy of the Occasions Mini Catalog today!

Keeping Busy, Stamping and Preparing for Camp

We're going to have so much fun tomorrow as we use the "cheep talk" stamp set to make a modified version of "Becky's Terrific Tote".  The tote bag has three outer pockets, one for a post it note folder, one which will hold three book marks, and a third to stash matching envelopes!

This class is full... and I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow!  We'll be making 6 cards too.. what a terrific way to spend an extended lunch hour, or spring break.

See you at camp!

Last week, the Jax Starz got together for a demonstrator training event, opportunity night, and swap.  I always enjoy these meetings as they are an excellent opportunity to socialize and network with other demonstrators in the group.  The swaps are a great source of ideas, and I also get to see how some of the others are developing their stampin' talents.

Here are a few of the swaps I received last week... this first one is from one of my downline, Eva:

pocketsilswap_eva_0309

Card Stock:  Sahara Sand, Baja Breeze

Craft Ink:  Whisper White

Other:  Scallop edge punch, ticket corner punch, narrow whisper white grosgrain ribbon.

Eva's come a long way from the day I first met her... she came to just one of my classes and although she had not stamped before, she loved it so much that she immediately signed up to become a demonstrator.

ginastulipswap_0309

Gina's swap... she's been a demonstrator for about a year now.  I love how she cleverly used the small oval punch with the scallop edge punch to make these pretty tulips!

susanbestbutterfly_swap0309

Susan's swap... always a pleasant surprise, and very well done.  Love the cameo coral and basic gray accompanied DSP!

More swaps tomorrow... and don't forget, time is running out on the demonstrator kit special!

Do Over... and Wedding Invites for Sarah and Joe

Yesterday I posted two cards for the Mojo79Sketch challenge... but I really wasn't overly happy with the second one.  It was clean and simple, but it somehow lacked that special 'something'.  Later in the afternoon, while tinkering away in my stampin' room I noticed a stray butterfly flitting about, and extra or leftover from last week's demonstrator swaps.  And Wow!! What a difference a simple embellishment can make!

remakemojo79sketch_embellis

Supply list:

Whisper White and Kiwi Kiss, So Saffron Card Stock

Urban Oasis Designer Series Paper

Cheep Talk, God's Beauty, and Really Retro Stampin' Up! Stamp Sets

Old Olive narrow Grosgrain

Versamark and Kiwi Kiss Ink

Black Embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Dimensionals, Paper Snips, Eyelet Border Punch and Pumpkin Pie stampin' write marker

Weddings are in the air... and I love creating custom wedding invitations!  Sarah and Joe are no exception, they are getting married this summer!  I knew Sarah was shopping for special wedding invites, and that she wanted "beach theme" for her wedding announcements and response cards.  So... I asked her if she'd consider handmade invites.  She was thrilled with the prospect, so I scurried off to create a few samples for her.  Last week we met for lunch, and I shared the final 4 designs based on criteria she had given me... and here's a sneak at the ones she selected:

sarahNjoeInvites

The actual words will be computer generated in close to cocoa ink.  I'll have to take a better photo of it when I have time... The Baja Breeze and Whisper White card stock have a really fresh and crisp appeal.

The embossed shell is one of 5 stamps from the "Seaside" stamp set.  It's not in your current Spring/Summer 2009 idea book and catalog because it is on the dormant list!  You can still order this stamp set #110990 at my online Stampin' Up! Store

Check back tomorrow.. you'll see more demonstrator swaps and ideas from last week's downline meeting!

Mojo Monday 2 Cards and Double Post Today

Yikes... I'm doing a double post today.  The Mojo Monday challenge didn't seem to be 'happening' this morning (or I got up waaaaay too early)... and so posted around the challenge.  Sorry for the double post!!

So.. here are my challenge cards.  Card (S)... yes, I did two of them. I adhered closely to the guidelines of the challenge when making the first card, I didn't really care for it and made a second card!  So... as goes the tradition, here is the MOJO79Sketch:

Mojo79Sketchcbyu

And here is the 2nd card I made.  The white scalloped piece is turned the other way and scored at each scallop to represent a picket fence.  I used my texturz plates to emboss small dots and punch out a golf ball, which I shaded with an aqua painter and going grey marker.  My Faux Rattan Technique (posted HERE a couple days ago) represents a cozy old rockin' chair.  I couldn't see adding a fancy ribbon bow to the texture already in play... so used linen thread to meet the challenge criteria.  Too bad my husband cannot golf any longer, I'm sure he'd appreciate the card anyway!!

myfathersdaygolfer_fauxratt

I cut a grass edge along the bottom of the card too... simply snipping the edge closely in a random pattern, and then used a clean and new versamark ink pad to highlight the edges of the card and grass... gave it a little more depth.

rattan_grass_golfer rattan_golfball79closeup

The stamp set "And Many Mower" will be available on April 1st, and is featured in the new Occasions Mini Catalog which many of you will soon be receiving in the mail!

Kind of fun, don't you think?

OK.. so here is the card I didn't care for... using the lovely branch from the "Cheep Talk" Stamp Set and greeting from "Really Retro" stamp set.  It's OK.. just not as fun as the other card!

Beautiful Butterfly Swap and Italian Wedding Soup Recipe Request

I just love the Stampin' Up! level one hostess set "God's Beauty".  The set is FREE when you host a workshop with merchandise totals of $150.00 or more.  This swap card was made for last week's downline meeting.

Gods_butterflycbyu0309

Stamps:  God's Beauty

Card Stock:  Very Vanilla, Kiwi Kiss, So Saffron

Classic Ink:  Kiwi Kiss and Basic Black

Other:  Versamark Ink, Clear Embossing Powder, Black Embossing Powder, Texturz Plates #2, Big Shot Machine, Texturz Pad, and impressions pad, Really Rust Stampin' Write Marker, Dimensionals

The leaf image was stamped in Classic Kiwi Kiss ink, and then clear embossing powder quickly poured over the image.  A pre-heated embossing gun allowed the image to emboss quickly and prevent burning the card stock.

The message "Beauty is God's handwriting - Ralph Waldo Emerson" was embossed similarly using classic basic black ink.  It's a great way to emboss images and words with ultra fine detail!

The butterfly was embossed the old fashioned way... with versamark and black EP onto so saffron card stock.  And accents of really rust were added with the Stampin' Write Marker.

My customers often joke that I should run a restaurant on the side, and/or meal delivery service.  They've come to expect really "good eats" when they come to camps, I guess I have spoiled them a bit too much.  I make this soup often, it's really very quick and easy to assemble... and for lack of a better idea, served it at my techniques class this past week.  Of course, they wanted the recipe... so here it is!

Italian Wedding Soup

Ingredients List:

  • 1 pkg frozen italian meatballs*
  • 64 oz. chicken broth
  • 1 medium oninon, finely chopped
  • 2 ribs celery finely chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, cut into small (1/2") cubes .. leave skin on
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped carrot
  • 1/2 cup ditalini pasta
  • 2 TBSP Italian Herb Seasoning
  • 2-3 tsp black pepper  (today I used 3 tsp... but if I'm using home made broth, reduce to taste)
  • 6-8 cloves garlic peeled and smashed
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried basil

Preparation:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees, put meatballs in a single layer onto a baking sheet and cook for appx 20 mins. Drain any fat, add to soup.
  • *If using large meatballs, quarter them to make more bite sized pieces.
  • Prepare vegetables as directed above.
  • Heat chicken broth to boiling, add vegetables and cook appx. 5-7 minutes until tender.
  • Add seasonings, stir.
  • Add ditalini, and cook according to package directions (appx. 7-10 more minutes), stirring to prevent sticking.
  • Add meatballs, reduce reduce heat to simmer... for appx. 20 minutes

Have a really good week... and please check back tomorrow to see some fabulous swaps/shares!

Quick Cards for a Great Group of Ladies

I had an opportunity to meet a new group of ladies on Thursday, and we made these two quick cards.  Only one of them had ever stamped...  and their cards came out beautiful.  We are going to get together once a month and start a new tradition for their circle, they enjoyed it so much!!

topnotesaleabration0309

This first card featured the Sale-A-Bration Stamp set "polka dot punches" and sale-a-bration designer series paper and ribbon too!  It was a fun way to make a quick yet elegant card using the top note die and simple sponging of color.  The Sale-A-Bration merchandise is only available through March 31st, and FREE with each $50 in merchandise!  Order your FREE stamps and paper HERE!

The second card used the tart 'n tangy stamp set... I thought it would be fun to do a card with an apple as this group was meeting at a local school.  The little apple was colored with markers to -achieve the two tone look and then layered and pop-dotted onto the card.  Both cards also used the stampin' up stamp set "Elegant Cheer".

It's been a very busy week and difficult week... topped with 9 hours in the emergency room on Friday with my DD.  We had quite a scare, but everything is now fine.

I hope to see you back here tomorrow and I hope to re-join the Mojo Monday Challenge and post my mojo monday card after the challenge is posted on Monday!

Tutorial... Step by Step Faux Rattan

Yesterday I posted this card featuring Faux Rattan, a technique I stumbled upon while experimenting with the texturz plates in my very very messy stampin' room.  Today, I'm going to share exactly how the Faux Rattan was created... and how to make Faux Tree Bark too!

wickerthoughts&prayersweb

Supplies:

  • Distressed Plate from Texturz Plates # 4 Set
  • Texturz Impressions Pad and Silicone Rubber
  • Big Shot Machine with multi-purpose platform
  • Whisper White Card Stock (I used a 2.5 x 4" piece to experiment with)
  • Close To Cocoa and Creamy Caramel Classic Ink Pads
  • Brayer with soft rubber attachment (beige)
  • Section cut from your stampin' sponge
  • Versamark Ink
  • Clear Embossing Powder
  • Heat Gun

First, you're going to lay the short edge of the whisper white card stock onto the distressed plate parallel to the short edge of the plate:

1rattan1cbyu

Carefully cover with the Texturz silicone rubber and impressions pads and place entire assembly on the multi-purpose platform.

Crank 'er up.... run it through the big shot machine... that simple!!

Remove assembly from the big shot machine, and peel the piece of cardstock from the plate... place the side that was face up on the plate facing UP onto a paper protected surface.  (This would be the de-bossed vs. em-bossed surface.)

Now, load up your brayer with Creamy Caramel Classic Ink... it doesn't have to be perfectly covered with ink... variation in rattan is quite natural, remember?

Brayer in the same directions as the debossed lines.  Your card stock will look like this:

2rattan2cbyu

Next, put the creamy caramel brayered card stock face down onto the texture plate with the long side of the card stock parallel to the short end of the plate.  Take time to line it up nicely or your rattan will be skewed.

3rattan3cbyu

You want the long edge parallel to the bottom of the plate... don't worry about the vertical embossing lines because they're not straight anyway!!  And.. you cannot see the caramel inked lines because they are face down, of course.

Cover with the Texturz silicone and impressions pads as before, and run it through your big shot again.

Because it was difficult to photograph the embossed result, I combined the next two steps in the next photo.  On the right side, you can see the faint lines of embossing across the brayered card stock.

4rattan4cbyu

On the LEFT side, you can see that I've highlighted the cross-way embossing.  This was done with a stampin' sponge... but there is a specific way it must be done:

  • First, ink up your sponge with Close to Cocoa Classic Ink
  • On your protected surface, starting OFF the cardstock, apply the ink to the card stock in the SAME direction as the newly embossed lines, wiping across the card stock.

Beginning the sponge OFF the card stock will result in nice dark edges which appear old and worn... just like a rattan surface.  If you made a mistake and didn't position your card stock correctly on the plate, you would get something that looks more like  "faux tree bark"... pretty cool, but not rattan!

wrongway

But THIS is what you really want it too look like...

5rattan5cbyu

Pretty cool... but we CAN and will do better!

  • Turn on your heat gun and let it heat up... it will make your work go more quickly and prevent limit chances of burning your project.
  • Cover the entire surface of the card stock with Versamark Ink
  • Cover that surface with Clear Embossing Powder
  • Heat with the heat gun, moving in slow circles across the entire surface.  When it's shiny, it's done..

Here is what your "faux rattan" will now look like:

6rattan6cbyu

Pretty cool, huh??  I'd love to see what you do with this technique too!

Techniques Class... Faux Rattan

When asked to demo a technique at our local meeting for Stampin' Up! demonstrators, and in a crunch to come up with a second technique for and upcoming class, I granted myself a real 'play day'.  My Stampin' Room looks more like a war room now, with supplies scattered and piled for 14 feet of table surface.  I did come up with a technique for the meeting... but also invented a brand new technique which I've coined "Faux Rattan" (it reminds me of a rattan purse I once owned...) and I have to tell you I'M LOVING FAUX RATTAN!  My mind is just whirling with ideas for faux rattan...   I'm working on a step by step tutorial and hope to post it in a few days.  (But I'll have to clean up my Stampin' Room first!)

Here's the second technique card we made in the class, the leaves of the tree were first sponged with mellow moss classic ink, and then a second time with Old Olive ink.
