Simple and Quick Butterfly Card

Oh yes.. yet another re-inker technique..

This quick and cute card uses a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol and 4 colors of classic re-inkers.  There has been so much buzz about the beautiful butterfly on the front cover of the Fall Winter Idea Book and Catalog that my stamp campers wanted to make a butterfly too!

I know you're going to ask... where did the butterfly template come from... so here is what I did.  First, I cut a piece of scratch paper to 3 3/4" x 5"... small enough to fit the front of a card.  After folding it in half, I referred to my "kind thoughts" stamp set which has beautiful small butterfly.. and just eyeballed 1/2 of the butterfly to create a similar image on my paper.  After cutting the image out, I traced it onto chipboard to be used as a pattern... and then cut out the chipboard butterfly.  TIP:  use a sanding block to smooth the edges of the chipboard to make the image smoothly traceable onto cardstock.  Scroll down to the bottom of this page for a list of supplies...

Next, we randomly stamped the largest image from the kind thoughts stamp set with versamark ink onto glossy white cardstock and heat-embossed with black detail embossing powder.

OK.. here comes the really fun part!!  Take a cotton ball, and wet two times with ordinary rubbing alcohol.  Now put one dot each of re-inker on the cotton ball:  tempting turquoise, bashful blue, green galore, and almost amethyst.  Quickly dab the cotton ball all over the cardstock.. moving far apart first.. and then filling in the voids as the color becomes less intense.  Because of the rubbing alcohol, the cardstock will dry very quickly.

Keep the glossy embossed cardstock flat, and lightly spritz with rubbing alcohol.  (Don't use a dollar store spray bottle.. use an art quality spritzer for this step).  Next, transfer your pattern to the back of the glossy cardstock, and cut out the image.

To make the butterfly body, I simply drew it in with a versamark marker.  Add a couple dimensional dots, black brads, black markered antennae, ticket corner punch..  and a Little Birthday Cheer stamp to the card... simple, quick, and easy!
